Here is my cutie… the little male Downy Woodpecker!! Always ready for his turn at the suet! Photograph taken in my back yard in Northern Virginia!

Actually what you have is a Cockaded Woodpecker, an endangered species that is beginning to show up in our Virginia area! How lucky you are to have this little guy visiting you! The Downy Woodpecker does not have the red cockade and has a wide white stripe down it’s back where the Cockaded has more of a “ladder” of black and white down it’s back. I have one of those in my front yard today!
